OVERVIEW

All cannabis products sold in the state of Pennsylvania, or the raw material used to make them, must be analyzed to determine the presence and concentration of certain heavy metals. The presence of each metal must be shown to be below the allowable limit in micrograms, which varies from metal to metal.

WHY IT MATTERS

Cannabis plants are uniquely adept bioremediators. This means they pull elements from their growth medium (soil, water, etc.) at a high rate. As a result, heavy metals can bioaccumulate in the plant structures that are consumed or used in the production of concentrated cannabis products and MIPs. Screening products for heavy metals helps ensure consumer safety.
